McKinney graduated from St. John's University in Collegeville and spent the ensuing years chasing stories through Wisconsin, Rhode Island, and Cambodia. A Minnesota childhood taught McKinney to love winter, skiing, the first warm day of spring, good books and time spent outdoors. He benefited from great teachers at Stillwater High School, and again in Collegeville and at the University of Minnesota. He's a fan of several local breweries, Prince, Jessie Diggins, the Loons, and newspaper reporters near and far who taught him the craft. McKinney bikes to work year-round from his home in the Twin Cities, which he shares with his wife and two sons.

Greg Mees is an award-winning visual journalist at the Star Tribune where he designs A1, the metro and the Sunday science+health sections. He is a state leader for the Society for News Design. Greg previously worked at the Denver Post, Boston Globe and several small newspapers in northern Colorado. He has a bachelor of arts in journalism with focuses in broadcast news and computer mediated communications from Colorado State University, where he also served as the editor in chief and visual managing editor of Colorado's only daily, student-run newspaper, the Rocky Mountain Collegian.

Investigations
Previously, Meitrodt was an investigative reporter for the New Orleans Times-Picayune. He also covered the Illinois statehouse for the Chicago Tribune. He grew up in southeastern Minnesota and graduated in 1984 from the University of Minnesota with a degree in journalism. He has won national journalism awards for his reporting on public corruption in Louisiana and Illinois, and for his coverage of corporate misconduct and educational disparities in Minnesota.

Meryhew is a native of St. Paul and a 1977 graduate of the University of Minnesota, where he worked as a writer and editor for the Minnesota Daily. He later he worked as a staff writer at the Worthington Daily Globe before joining the Minneapolis Star in 1980.

Rochester
Trey Mewes joined the Star Tribune in 2022 as our Rochester correspondent. He has spent more than 10 years reporting on southern Minnesota, first at the Austin Daily Herald, and more recently at the Mankato Free Press. He is a 2010 graduate of the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, with a double major in journalism and history. He is a Minnesota native who grew up in the southern part of the Cities. He enjoys hiking, pop culture, video games and basketball.
