A woman was found in a Lakeville parking lot shot to death early Tuesday, and a suspect was tracked down later in the day in Belle Plaine with a self-inflicted gunshot wound and arrested, authorities said.

Police said they found the woman about 2:40 a.m. outside the New Horizon Academy daycare near 203rd Street and Icefall Trail.

Police released no details about the circumstances leading to her death. Nor have they identified the woman or addressed a possible motive, but they did say in a statement that the victim and the man "were known to each other."

An earlier police statement explained that "area businesses near the body's location are not connected to the case."

According to Lakeville police: Belle Plaine police notified their counterparts in Lakeville that they found the man who is considered a suspect in the woman's death after officers were dispatched to a reported disturbance.

The officers made contact with a 32-year-old man from Lakeville who had shot himself. He was apprehended without incident and taken to HCMC. He later was moved to the Dakota County jail, where he is being held on suspicion of second-degree murder.

The man has yet to be charged. The Star Tribune generally does not identify suspects before they are charged. The suspect's criminal history in Minnesota includes two convictions for robbery and one for felony threats of violence.
