Two Minneapolis beaches are closed after testing showed the water had E. coli levels exceeding state guidelines.
The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) said Wednesday that it temporarily closed Bde Maka Ska's Thomas beach and Lake Hiawatha beach Tuesday. The high levels of bacteria were likely caused by Sunday's heavy rain that brought stormwater into the lakes, according to an MPRB news release.
When testing shows bacteria is back to levels within state guidelines, the beaches will be reopened.
Blue-green algae, which may be harmful to humans and pets, may also be present at the Lake Hiawatha beach, according to the MPRB website.
Most types of E. coli are harmless and live in humans' intestines. There are a few strains that can cause severe stomach cramps, bloody diarrhea and vomiting, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Sources of exposure include contaminated food, water and person-to-person contact.
