Scene & Heard: A golden day for Gopher Homecoming
Gopher Homecoming is a century-old tradition that brings together University of Minnesota students and alumni. First held in 1914, homecoming began as a modest affair consisting of an alumni dinner, concert and dance. This year, homecoming included a weeklong schedule of parties and concerts, a corn roast, an obstacle race and a service day, in addition to the parade and, of course, the big football game (a nail-biter in which the Gophers defeated Rutgers 34-32 on a last-second field goal. Whether simple or elaborate, homecoming provides a way for students and alumni to connect and share their college experiences — and their cheer, ski-u-mah!

The Star Tribune globe, out of the public eye for nearly a quarter century, has been restored and is being unveiled as part of the newspaper's 150th birthday bash. The delivery of the 66-year-old globe to the lobby of the Star Tribune Building in downtown Minneapolis on Tuesday morning (May 23rd) created a buzz. For its second annual fundraiser, A Taste of Africa offered samples of African cuisine from several Twin Cities restaurants, including Afro Deli, Flamingo Restaurant, Dichi's Kitchen and Kumba Senesie catering. The delicious event, held at Midpointe Event Center in St. Paul, raises money for the Rural Health Care Initiative, which aims to help the people of Tikonko, Sierra Leone. Proceeds will be used to make skilled health care accessible to the community as well as to complete a birth waiting home for pregnant women.
