      Wall Street opens higher after strong earnings, economy news

      Stocks are opening higher on Wall Street as traders welcome some strong reports on the economy including a drop in jobless claims and a big increase in retail spending, as well as more robust earnings from big companies including Citigroup and United Healthcare. The S&P 500 rose 0.7% early Thursday, putting it back above the record high it closed at on Tuesday. Gains from tech heavyweights including Apple helped push the Nasdaq up 1%. Treasury yields fell. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note fell to 1.60%. European markets were higher and Asian markets ended mixed.

      US expels Russian diplomats, imposes new round of sanctions

      The Biden administration on Thursday announced the expulsion of 10 Russian diplomats and sanctions against dozens of people and companies as it moved to hold the Kremlin accountable for interference in last year's presidential election and the hacking of federal agencies.
