Gerou, Irene "Renie" passed away peacefully in St. Anthony on April 15th, 2021, at the age of 84, surrounded by her family. Known for her infectious laugh and wicked sense of humor, Renie loved being a grandma, spending time with her large circle of friends, and was an active volunteer at both her church and Habitat for Humanity. Irene had an incredible knack for making those around her feel special and often penned letters to her friends, children, and grandchildren. Giving to others even in death, Renie donated her body to the University of Minnesota for research. Married to Jim Gerou for 45 years, the pair were avid travelers, dedicated Twins fans, and very active within the Columbia Heights Lions Club. Survived by her husband, Jim Gerou; her children, Christina (Ron) Moss, Richard Thompson, and Dave (Lisa) Thompson; stepchildren, Linda (Dale) Hanson, Paul (Kim) Gerou, and Michael Gerou; as well as 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Vivian Bixler,; sons Michael and Jeffrey Thompson; sister Yvonne Stephan; and granddaughter Renee Thompson. Irene's family would like to thank the staff at Chandler Place/Pearl Gardens for the remarkable care given to Irene during her time at the residence. A celebration of life will take place in June: Date and location to be determined. Memorials can be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
