A man is dead and a woman is hospitalized after a violent domestic dispute early Saturday in St. Paul.

Officers were called to the 800 block of Edmund Avenue at 12:15 a.m. Saturday on a report of a domestic assault, a St. Paul police spokeswoman said. During her 911 call, the woman told dispatchers that she had been assaulted by her boyfriend, who was armed with a handgun. She said she was able to break free and run to a neighbor's house, but that her boyfriend was there trying to break in.

When officers arrived at the neighbor's residence, the 26-year-old suspect had fled in his vehicle. Police found a large pool of blood in front of the residence and noted that a glass porch window was broken out.

Officers later found the man dead in his vehicle after it crashed into a car at the intersection of Edmund Avenue and Dale Street. A preliminary investigation indicated that he died of injuries suffered when he broke the window, but the Ramsey County medical examiner will determine the exact cause of death.

The woman was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, police said. The man's death is not considered a homicide, they said.
