John Anderson of Bunker Hills Golf Course shot a 4-under-par 68 Monday to take the first-round lead in the Minnesota Golf Association Mid-Amateur Championship at Midland Hills Country Club and Town and Country Club in St. Paul.

Anderson carded six birdies and two bogeys on his way to a 68 and a three-shot lead over J.T. Johnson of Woodbury and Troy Johnson of Maple Grove. The top three players are from Midland Hills.

The tournament continues through Wednesday.

Gophers women's hockey ranked No. 1 The defending NCAA champion Gophers women's hockey team is the top-ranked team in the U.S. College Hockey Online preseason poll.

The Gophers received 150 points and all 15 first-place votes while Wisconsin is ranked second with 128 points, followed by Cornell with 109. Boston College and North Dakota round out the top five.

Boston University is No. 6, followed by St. Lawrence, Minnesota Duluth, Northeastern and Mercyhurst.

AFCA polls • St. Thomas is ranked No. 3 in the AFCA Division III coaches poll with 914 points behind Mount Union of Ohio (1,047) and Mary Hardin-Baylor of Texas (986). Wisconsin-Whitewater is ranked fifth. Bethel, Wisconsin-Platteville and Wisconsin-Oshkosh are ranked No. 8, No. 17 and No. 22 respectively.

• Minnesota Duluth is ranked No. 2 in the AFCA Division II coaches poll with 717 points behind Pittsburg State of Kansas, which garned 749 points and 29 first-place votes. Minnesota State Mankato is ranked No. 22, its first appearance in the poll this season.

Etc. • The Gophers men's golf team is in 12th place with a 36-hole score of 613 after the first day of the Husky Invitational in Bremerton, Wash. Host Washington leads with a score of 573. Junior Alex Gaugert led the Gophers with rounds of 72 and 75.
