A woman and her two young grandsons were killed in a two-vehicle crash over the weekend after their driver crossed into the wrong lane and hit an SUV, authorities said Monday.

The crash occurred about 11:45 a.m. Saturday on County Road 18 near Church Road in Welch Township, south of the Twin Cities, according to the Goodhue County Sheriff's Office.

Killed were 47-year-old Stacy Lande of Hager City, Wis., and grandsons Zachary Johnson, 8, and Taylor Johnson, 5, both of Red Wing, Minn., the Sheriff's Office said.

They were in a car driven by Robert Welch, 50, of Hager City. Welch was taken to a hospital in Rochester with serious injuries.

The SUV driver, Lynn Rapp, 68, of Buffalo Gap, S.D., was treated for minor injuries at a hospital in Red Wing.

Welch was heading north on County Road 18 and "crossed over the centerline on a curve," the Sheriff's Office said. Rapp was southbound "and swerved in an attempt to avoid [Welch's car] but was unable to and struck the passenger side of the vehicle."

Rapp had on her seat belt, and the boys were in child restraints, the Sheriff's Office said. It's not known whether Welch was wearing a seat belt.

Grief upon grief

More than two years ago, the grandsons' mother died, friend Tasha Taylor-Brock said in an online fundraising effort started to raise money for funeral and other expenses.

Marya Christensen's body was found in her minivan in the Mississippi River on the Wisconsin side near Red Wing. The 23-year-old woman lived near Hager City and was heading home from Red Wing in mid-March 2016 after socializing with friends at a bar.
