St. Paul police are investigating a death that occurred Thursday on the East Side.

Police did not specify the nature of the incident, but emergency dispatch audio said that police were called to the 1400 block of Maryland Avenue E. for a man who had received "multiple gunshots."

Police said the incident occurred about 2:20 p.m. When police arrived, they found the injured man near Maryland and Prosperity avenues. The man was taken to Regions Hospital, where he died.

According to emergency dispatch radio, there was a report of shots fired in the area. Someone ran into a nearby Walgreens, and police tracked at least one vehicle as it left the scene.

The shooting took place near the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), and BCA surveillance video captured two vehicles at the scene. It was unclear what roles, if any, they played in the shooting.

An officer is heard over the radio telling dispatch that medics en route needed to "step it up," referencing "gunshot wounds to the head."

Police spokesman Steve Linders said no other information was immediately available.
