St. Paul police were investigating a homicide in the city's Summit-University neighborhood Thursday night, authorities said.

A man was shot in the head while sitting inside a van in the 700 block of Carroll Avenue around 8:45 p.m., police spokesman Steve Linders said.

A 911 caller reported hearing 10 shots ring out near the intersection of N. Avon Street and Carroll, across from Carty Park. Officers responded to the shots fired call and located the victim in the driver's seat.

Paramedics performed CPR, but the man died at the scene.

The shooting marks the city's fifth homicide of the year.No suspect is in custody at this time.

The Ramsey County medical examiner will release the victim's identity pending an autopsy.

The gunfire occurred at the same intersection where a 19-year-old was fatally shot last fall. Wilbert Harris-McCalister, of St. Paul, was gunned down Sept. 7 during a marijuana deal gone wrong.

"This neighborhood has been through a lot," Linders said.
