A suspect thought to be armed and dangerous barricaded himself inside an RV parked near the Maplewood Mall on Wednesday evening, prompting an hourslong standoff with police.

The situation ended peacefully after the man was arrested about 9:30 p.m., authorities said.

It began just after 5 p.m., when Maplewood police tried to stop the driver near White Bear and Gervais avenues for a warrant. The suspect drove away, but his vehicle was found on the 3000 block of White Bear Avenue, near the LA Fitness parking lot.

When officers made contact with the suspect, authorities say he threatened violence with an improvised explosive device. People were asked to avoid the area.

Officers used robotic devices to disable the vehicle around 9 p.m. and eventually deployed an irritating gas to force the occupant outside. He surrendered without incident.

The suspect, 42, who has not yet been identified, was booked at the Ramsey County jail late Wednesday. The Star Tribune does not generally name suspects until they've been charged.

Charges of fleeing police in a motor vehicle and threats of violence are pending.
