Dave Ryan and Matt Sughrue, the defending champion and runner-up from last year, both reached the quarterfinals Tuesday in the U.S. Senior Amateur at The Minikahda Club in Minneapolis.

Ryan, of Taylorville, Ill., beat Michael Hughett of Tulsa, Okla., 2 and 1 in the round of 16. Sughrue, of Arlington, Va., edged Keith Decker of Martinsville, Va., 3 and 2.

Paul Simson, of Raleigh, N.C., also advanced with a 6 and 4 win over Chip Lutz of Reading, Pa., in a matchup of past Senior Amateur champions. Simson won this event in 2010 and 2012, Lutz in 2015.

In the closest match of the day, Frank Vana, of Boxford, Mass., beat Alan Hill of Spring Branch, Texas, with a par on the 19th hole. Vana won three of the final four holes.

U's Squires gets two national honors

Gophers forward Sydney Squires, a senior from Hudson, Wis., was named the national player of the week by the NCAA and the United Soccer Coaches and Big Ten offensive player of the week.

She tied a school record with four goals — plus an assist — against Iowa State and also had a goal against North Dakota State as Minnesota went 2-0-1 last week.

Squires' goals against the Cyclones all came within a 17-minute stretch of the first half; three of her goals were on headers.

Snyder wins state PGA Pro title

Brent Snyder of Troy Burne G.C. defeated Eric Rolland of Augsburg College on the first playoff hole to win Minnesota PGA Professional Championship at The Pines at Grand View Lodge in Nisswa, Minn.

Rolland's par putt of about 2 feet to tie on the extra hole lipped out. Both had 3-under 141s for the 36-hole tournament.
