One bleeding man and two handguns were part of the scene of a fatal shooting on a sidewalk outside a St. Paul bar, authorities said Thursday.

So was the suspected shooter, who called authorities about 11 p.m. Wednesday and was there when officers arrived in front of Born's Bar on the 800 block of Rice Street, according to police.

The victim was taken by Fire Department paramedics to Regions Hospital, where he died.

The suspect, a 31-year-old Forest Lake man, was taken to police headquarters for questioning and later jailed. He has not been charged. The Star Tribune generally does not identify suspects until they have been charged.

"The victim and the suspect encountered one another on the sidewalk," said police spokesman Steve Linders. "Some sort of altercation occurred, and then at least one shot was fired."

What prompted the gunfire remains under investigation, Linders said, but police believe the men knew each other.
