Minneapolis police on Friday continued their search for a gunman or gunmen who they believe fatally shot a man during an apparent home invasion in the Jordan neighborhood.

Officers responded to the residence in the 2700 block of Irving Avenue North around 11:20 p.m. Thursday after receiving a 911 call from a relative of the victim, who had gone to check on the man and found one of the doors to the home ajar, according to police and emergency dispatch audio. The relative found the man lying in bed with multiple gunshot wounds and called police.

A number of spent shell casings were discovered inside the home. Officers also found several TVs stacked near a doorway — supporting the theory that the shooting was the result of a home invasion.

The man's identity has not yet been released and no arrests had been announced as of Friday afternoon.

The death, Minneapolis' 24th homicide of this year, continued a particularly violent stretch that has seen five slayings across the city over a span of less than two weeks.

Jamar Nelson said that after some of the recent homicides members of the street outreach outfit A Mother's Love went door knocking to reassure nervous residents. Some people "are conflicted because they wanna do the right thing and they're tired of it," but were hesitant to come forward with information because they feared retribution or did not trust police, he said.

"I think when they see these cats get arrested, it gives them some sense of relief, but it's going to take them a while to get that" trust back, Nelson said.

Minneapolis Police ask anyone with information about the shooting to call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
