A pedestrian was seriously injured Saturday night after being struck by a motorist in Columbia Heights.

Officers responded to the intersection of 40th and University avenues NE. just before 7 p.m. on a report of a crash involving a pedestrian, authorities said.

Police said an early investigation indicates that the pedestrian was standing in the center median of University Av. and stepped into traffic, being struck by a southbound vehicle.

According to emergency dispatch audio, the pedestrian was taken to North Memorial Health Hospital in Robbinsdale in critical condition.

The driver stopped and is cooperating with police.

The Anoka County Sheriff's Office is investigating.
