Robert Covington, who hasn't played since Dec. 31 because of a right knee bone bruise, suffered a recent setback and is expected to miss the rest of the season, the Wolves announced Thursday.
And he'll have extended company in street clothes. Guards Jeff Teague (left foot) and Derrick Rose (elbow) are also expected to miss the rest of the season.
An MRI on Rose's elbow revealed a chip fracture, while Teague is slated to be in a walking boot before being re-evaluated in three weeks, the Wolves announced. The group announcement Thursday morning came with the Wolves all but mathematically eliminated from playoff contention. They have 10 games remaining in the season after playing Thursday night in Charlotte.
The long-term impact of all three injuries remains to be seen. Covington, a key piece in the November trade for Jimmy Butler, helped the Wolves to a 9-3 stretch during which they played their best basketball of the year after the deal. He is under contract for three more seasons after this. Teague can opt in for one more season with the Wolves, while Rose will be a free agent.
All three finish with seasons that were at times fantastic but frustratingly incomplete.
Covington averaged 14.5 points and 2.3 steals in 22 games, Rose had a 50-point game that riveted the league and was nearly voted an All-Star, while Teague averaged 8.2 assists per game.
