As police continued to investigate the city's first homicide of the year, family and friends identified the 20-year-old man shot and killed outside a Crystal apartment complex Friday night.

Deshawn McCabe, of Minneapolis, died of a single gunshot wound to the chest. Officers responded to the 3000 block of Sumter Avenue N. around 7:45 p.m. Friday on a report of a man down in the parking lot. They found the victim injured outside Crystal Village Apartments.

First responders administered CPR, but McCabe died at the scene.

He worked as a sales representative at Foot Locker and leaves behind a nearly 1-year-old son, according to his Facebook page.

Authorities have identified a person of interest in the shooting but have not yet taken the person into custody, said Crystal Deputy Chief Brian Hubbard. "It's pretty clear to us this isn't random," he said.

There is no video surveillance available for police to examine, nor is it considered a problem area.

"We don't get a lot of these," he said of homicides. "Especially in a suspicious situation like this."
